I grew up being a part of an extended family farm that included my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather, 2 Great Uncles and 1 Great Aunt, my Grandfather and Grandmother, my parents 2 Uncles, 3 Aunts and we all worked together every day on just about anything except we all had our own dairy herd. I was the oldest of my siblings and cousins, when I got married I married a "town girl" who began to learn the farm life. Our Son Shawn was born and he went with me just about everywhere, when I went out to milk I put him in one of those back pack things and he would be up on the wall watching everything that went on. When he was 6 I was gone for the noon chores he was able to tell
his mom exactly which buttons to push and in what order so that the cows got feed at noon.
We decided to sell the farm and that I would go to Bible College, which was a major change for us as well as I was the first Shoen in 5 generations to leave the farm, it started a path for other cousins to follow. My two younger brothers are still farming.
Shawn and I talked often about purchasing some beef cattle at some time to help get us back to our roots.
We talked about our Scottish heritage and did some research into the Scottish Highland breed and decided that it would be cool if we had some to raise for the quality of the meat as well as represent our heritage.
The original cattle were purchased in 2017 to create our fold. We started on a friends building site and then in 2018 Shawn purchased a building site and 12 acres of pasture land. This move created Shoen's Holdfast Farm.
We currently have 6 cows and a bull and 14 offspring of various ages. We are grass fed during the summer months and grass hay the rest of the year. We do not supplement any grain. We do not use any vaccine nor any chemicals on our cattle.
